2022/23 was a season of what might have been for Blackburn after they finished 7th just outside the playoff places. An exciting young side, they were challenging for automatic promotion for much of the campaign before a disappointing run in the last few months saw them drop out of the top six. It has been a quiet off season with Rovers working to a tight transfer budget. Money needs to be generated before it can be spent, with the club currently exploring the free and loan markets. The transfer market restrictions have led to speculation that manager Jon Dahl Tommasson could leave. Three new players have been signed; Norwegian international midfielder Tronstad and Plymouth attacker Ennis arriving on frees while Icelandic forward Sigurdsson has been loaned in. Sigurdsson has suffered a groin injury in training though and faces eight weeks out. There have been a few departures. The major one is that of star forward Brereton Diaz, the club’s top scorer for the last two seasons (14 league goals in 2022/23). A strength of Blackburn last season was their home form, they ended with the fourth best home record in the Championship in 2022/23. Rovers still have the makings of a solid side but with Diaz gone and Sigurdsson injured, there is a concern of where the goals are going to come from.

Target

Mid-table. With their restrictions in the transfer market and current uncertainty at the club it is difficult to see Rovers progressing this season.
