Macclesfield begin life outside the Football League having endured an absolutely horrendous run of form in 2012 that resulted in finishing bottom of the table. Their last league win came on December 31 and they have since then avoided defeat on only seven occasions out of 23 games. With the club lacking in funds and 80% of the squad leaving in the summer, the board decided to make a left-field choice in appointing the new manager by choose Steve King. He garnered a good reputation in the non-league when winning promotion from Blue Square South with Lewes back in 2008 but have since then fallen off the radar. He will be keen to test himself in the top level of non league and will see the chance to coach Macc as a good opportunity. He made some shrewd signings with Peter Winn and Ryan Jackson providing plenty of width while John-Paul Kissock and Kieran Charnock are fine acquisitions on loan. Setting big targets would be unwise for a basically new team and recent evidence shows that teams coming from the Football League mostly struggle to impose themselves in the battle for promotion. Still, a place in the top ten is not out of the question for a young Macclesfield side.

Target

Anything above a mid-table spot will be a big success for King and company
